Indy's Finest sign National Letter's of Intent
I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was heavily recruited to play football at the college level by DI powers Oklahoma, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Wisconsin, Penn State, Ohio State, Louisville and numerous others and I verbally committed to play at Michigan, but like most 17/18 year olds I was truly undecided until the day came to make a decision. So I decided to take my talents to Norman, Oklahoma to become a student-athlete for the University of Oklahoma Sooners.
As I have coached and followed the game of football for over 20 years the trend now is to verbally commit almost as early as your 9th grade year! The summer combines and recruiting services have a heavy hand at getting you noticed. Verbally commiting is just that nothing binding just a verbal that I will come to play for you, but until I sign I will look at other interest.
The recruiting game has become high stakes and lately programs have been doing so fringe illegal activity to get that blue chip or 5 star recruit. My advice to all up and coming talent is to make sure that you understand what is at stake and know the language! I was in the dark on the recuiting process back in 1985 and today it can be imposing to recruits and their family. Consult with your high school coach, principal, and guidance counselor to ensure that you are qualified to make a educated decision...don't go into it blind have ALL the information on the schools, the coaches, the academics, social life, and if it is the right fit for YOU!
