5A #3 Ben Davis Giants go on the road and pound Pike 24-0
The Good
The Giants a relatively young team has surprisingly run it's record to 2-0 with impressive wins over 4A #1 Cathedral and 5A Pike. It seems as though Ben Davis has a TEAM of guys who do what they practice. In this game they were led by senior Malcolm Fogle who rushed for 75 yards and a score, caught five passes for 34 yards and blocked 2 Red Devil punts. "We have alot of great guys on this team,"said Fogle, and I just do my best to play my role,"The Giant defense was impressive all night even when it looked as if the Red Devils would score the Giants would opportunistically take it away. Led by senior safety Antonio Allen and his crew of non stop hitters the Giants limited the high powered Red Devil offense to just 54 yards rushing thus making them one dimensional.
The Bad
The Pike Red Devils committed 7 turnovers( 5 lost fumbles and 2 interceptions),but still had opportunities to score seeing 1st half drives end in in succession: fumble, fumble, punt, block, interception, and fumble. Playing without starting runningback Derrick Wilkerson (knee) hurt the ground game as they finished with 54 yards.
From my perspective
The Giant approach of TEAM first works. When you have a team of first year varsity players as they do it comes down to the team buying into the team way. Offensively sophomore quarterback Kyle Castner looks sharp and the running game is adequate. Defensively the Giants apply pressure on every down and special teams wise they have a kicker who can make a field goal in the clutch. The Red Devils are a very talented group seemingly looking for a leader. Junior quarterback Brent Lyles is capable of putting up huge numbers through the air and junior receiver Dominique Booth is capable of equal success receiving, but you must be consistent every down, every play, every series. Turnovers kill and that's what happened to the Red Devils.
Key Stats
Giants finish with 330 total yards(204 yards rushing and 126 yards passing) while Pike coming off a dominant week one victory were snake bitten with 7 turnovers (2 interceptions and 5 lost fumbles).
Next Week
Ben Davis 2-0 will host North Central 0-2
Pike 1-1 will visit Conference Indiana foe Southport 1-1
