It was obvious from warm ups that Lawrence Central had the most talented players, but like Coach Herman Edwards so eloquently said a few years back when he was Head Coach of the New York Jets..."You Play to Win the Game." Unfortunately for the Perry Meridian Falcons they were up against a more talented team on Friday night.
The Good
The 5A #9 Bears used a dominant run game led by the 3 headed attack of Isaiah Townsends (197 yards), Drake Christian (103 yards), and Alex Rodriquez (101 yards) to control the game from start to finish. The Bears defense also smothered the Falcons run game limiting them to just 7 totals yards of rushing.
The Bad
The Falcons run game was stymied all night by the relentless and fast attacking Bears defense. The Falcons lone score came in the 4th quarter on a 4 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Conner Smith to receiver Collin Timmons. The bright spot for the Falcons was that Smith did pass for 136 yards, but did have 2 interceptions.
From My Perspective
Three weeks into the 2012 season I have seen several elite teams play in Ben Davis, Warren Central, Cathedral, Avon and even Pike, North Central, but from my perspective I believe Lawrence Central is the most talented team of all that I have seen and are deserving of a higher ranking in the polls. The have beaten Lawrence North, North Central, and Perry Meridian all convincingly. The have a high octane offense averaging 50 points per game and a defense that is fast and furious only giving up 3 points per game. I will not crown them champion yet "like former NFL coach Dennis Green said in his post game rant when his Arizona Cardinals blew a big lead and lost", but they should be a team if interest as the season progresses!
