The Good
In one of the best games I've witnessed this season as far as atmosphere, coaching, physicality, and pure football no tricks or gimmicks the Center Grove Trojans outlasted the Ben Davis Giants in an old school smash mouth style of game. The teams in my opinion were evenly matched and the final score was indicative. The relentless wing T offense (run first, second, and always) against a physical and fast Ben Davis defense led by Indiana University recruit safety Antonio Allen. In the 1st half the Giants seemed to have things working in their favor scoring first on a Malcolm Fogle 4 yard run. Center Grove tied the game in the 2nd quarter on a SURPRISE 53 pass to a wide open Logan Huston. The second half mirrored the 1st as Fogle again scored this time on a 10 yard run as it looked as though the home crowd would help the Giants keep the momentum, but Center Grove went to work. The Trojans marched 78 yards in 15 plays as it looked as though the Giants defense was getting tired. This drive culminated with a Lane Morris 1 yard plunge to make it 14-14. The stage was now set for an exciting finish to a very physical MIC Conference game. The Trojans stuffed the Giants on a 4th and 1 for a 2yard loss as Ben Davis drove to the Trojans 13 early in the 4th quarter. On the ensuing drive, a 53 yard jaunt by Alex Lucas moved the Trojans to the Giants 10 and kicker Ben Wheeler kicked the go ahead 23 yard field goal with 7:58 left in the game. Ben Davis had a chance after a 6 yard Trojan punt the Giants could only grind out 5 yards with and then attempted a 39 yard field goal that went wide left.
The Bad
The Giants undefeated season hopes were dashed by the Trojans who took charge up front on both sides of the ball in the 2nd half culminating in 231 yards rushing, but also had138 passing yards.
From My Perspective
Although young on both sides of the ball the Giants are well coached. They attack on defense for 4 quarters and offensively they execute. The Trojans are a smash mouth run 1st offense, but occasionally will pop a pass or 2 to a wide open player, because they get the opposing teams defense to focus on the run. Expect both teams to be contenders not only for the MIC title, but in their respective Sectionals.
